HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, FOOD LABELLING & HEALTH CLAIMS
In 2003 the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a report on Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases expressing concern over the rising prevalence of chronic diseases (particularly diabetes, heart disease and obesity) now the major cause of death and disability worldwide. Chronic diseases currently account for almost half of the global burden of disease and the majority of these occur in developing countries. Unhealthy diet and physical inactivity are cited among the leading causes.
IH&RA Action
- IH&RA is lobbying to make WHO aware of its members’ concern that the foodservice industry is being placed in the same category as food retailers as far as food labelling is concerned and of the consequences mandatory and extensive food labelling would have for the foodservice sector (eg. restaurant menus, etc.)
- Working in close cooperation with some of its key members on the foodservice side, IH&RA has drafted an official position on Healthy Lifestyles which is currently being reviewed by membership and the Global Council on Food Service. Finalisation and publication of this position will strengthen the IH&RA lobbying position.
