SMOKING
Issue
The World HealthOrganization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, voted in May 2003, has embodied and reinforced the increasing trend to restrict smoking in public places through the introduction of legislation by governments and local authorities.
Hotels and restaurants are among the first places where the impact of inflexible and restrictive legislation is felt by customers. Clearly, a careful balance has to be achieved between satisfying the legitimate desires of non-smokers while respecting the rights of smokers. Hotels and restaurants have consistently lobbied for a degree of flexibility in order to accommodate guest preferences while safe-guarding the health of customers and staff.
