Dear hotelier,

This letter is about Hotel Energy Solutions, an opportunity being undertaken by several partners, including IH&RA and UNWTO[1]. Its immediate purpose is to create best practices and energy efficiency solutions that will allow hotels to start saving money by the beginning of next year.

In order to get an adequate database, we have to conduct the inevitable survey. While we aim to make it as simple as possible, we are sure that you will understand that energy utilization is a very significant issue that is worthy of both yours and our time.

Thus, we plan to conduct the research as follows:

  1. A general management survey (no more than four pages): to be completed by your management staff regarding your hotel and its energy policies. We estimate that this should consume no more than one hour of management time.
  2. An energy efficiency analysis: a more detailed survey directed towards your head of engineering and/or accountancy to ascertain your hotel’s operational details. We estimate that it will require not more than three hours.
  3. In-depth interviews: with volunteer hotels to build up our energy solutions toolkit
  4. A pilot program: to test the tools in four different types of destinations

We would greatly appreciate it if you could please complete Part I (general management survey), which is currently available accessible via this project. This survey will be open until April, 30, 2009  and should require no more than 30 minutes of your time. By participating, you will be provided with immediate access to energy efficiency best-practices, as we develop them. These tools will be specifically created for hotels such as yours and we are absolutely convinced that the time that you invest in the surveys will be more than compensated by the cost reductions you will see by implementing this toolkit.

As a part of the project, we will also be holding a series of cost cutting, energy efficiency 1-2 day workshops and your staff concerned will automatically be entitled to participate at no cost.

We completely understand that the time of your employees is very important, however the value of your engagement with IH&RA and UNWTO in this project is the free of charge access to top international expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energies, which would be significantly more expensive for you to access independently. At a later stage in the project, we will also work on encouraging governments to provide special incentives and stimulus for a green economic transformation including refurbishment of hotels restaurants and resorts.
