Eye on International Organisations
On his election as President Ghassan Aïdi wrote personally in November to introduce himself to the heads of the various international agencies with which IH&RA has long-standing relations. The reaction was a series of invitations to meet for one-on-one discussions which the President scheduled, along with the DG, during the week of 13 February.

The series of meetings started very logically in Paris with a visit to Mr Sergio Arzeni, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs & Local Development and Mr Alain Dupeyras, Head of the Tourism Programme. The timing was particularly opportune as OECD has just approved a new 5-year programme for the Tourism Committee running from 2007 to 2011.

Travelling the next day to Geneva, Ghassan Aïdi & Avi Rosental met on 14 February with ISO Secretary-General Alan Bryden and Sophie Clivio, Technical Group Manager in the Standards Department. As a preliminary to the meeting, Alan Bryden indicated that he welcomed this opportunity for an open discussion with IH&RA leaders.

IOM Director-General Brunson McKinley welcomed Ghassan Aïdi as a new Member of of the IOM Business Advisory Board, to convene in Beijing next month on 19-20 March. Also participating in the meeting on the IOM side were Anne-Marie Buschman-Petit and Jill Helke both part of the DG’s Cabinet.

The following day the President and DG spent a morning at UNWTO HQ in Madrid, meeting first in private with Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli and Assistant Secretary General Geoffrey Lipman. IH&RA and UNWTO have a longstanding and fruitful working relationship. Francesco Frangialli has been a key note speaker at the last three IH&RA congresses – and IH&RA has contributed regularly to UNWTO work eg the Programme Committee, the SG’s Strategic Planning Group and the Business Council.

2006 has been excellent year for the hotel industry, according to the year-end data from the HotelBenchmark TM Survey by Deloitte. The combination of robust economic performance, high profile international events, and the growing popularity of newly emerging tourism destinations, coupled with people’s increasing desire to travel and experience new things – have all been key in driving performance forwards.
