INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR TOURISM & RELATED SERVICES
IH&RA ACTION AT ISO & UNWTO

There is increasing pressure from a number of international bodies including WTO-Tourism and ISO – International Organisation for Standardisation - for the development of international standards for the Tourism industry, specifically in the area of Tourism Services. This trend is not supported by the majority of our members.

IH&RA action at ISO

Obtained official liaison status with the new TC 228
Coordinating NACE Members to lobby their own National Standards Organisations
Coordinating Chains opposition in order to lobby their own National Standards Organisation and ISO

IH&RA supports hotel and restaurant standards evolved by the industry at the national level to ensure the well-being, comfort, safety and security of their clients and employees.
IH&RA applauds the hospitality industry for implementing and adhering to strict and stringent quality control standards that already exist in their own countries.
IH&RA applauds the industry’s ongoing and constant drive to improve quality.
IH&RA applauds the majority of hotels and restaurants working proactively to develop their own internal corporate standards that often exceed national requirements.

Therefore, IH&RA opposes the International Organization for Standardization proposal to create new international “standards for tourism services” covering hotel & restaurant services as this exercise is deemed redundant and costly to the hospitality industry which is already working to offer quality service - the primary goal of hospitality establishments. IH&RA action at UNWTO

IH&RA has written to UNWTO advising them of the general opposition to TC 228’s possible inclusion of Hotel & Restaurant Services in its work programme
IH&RA replied to the UNWTO Questionnaire on Standards for Tourism, indicating that IH&RA (and its Members) have no interest in defining international standards covering Hotels & Restaurants.
IH&RA circulated this questionnaire to all National Associations asking them to complete Part III of the UNWTO questionnaire and return it to UNWTO indicating that their association has no interest in defining international standards covering Hotel & Restaurant services (with a copy to IH&RA and to the national representative at UNWTO or appropriate government tourism officials).
