President's Message

I have just completed a particularly busy round of representation and speaking engagements on behalf of IH&RA. This took me from Cairo to Tunis, Doha, Geneva, London … and finally to Paris for our latest Board meeting on 29 June. In Paris, we met in the historic boardroom of our French member UMIH (Union des Métiers et des Industries de l’Hôtellerie) at the kind invitation of UMIH President André Daguin. This return to the UMIH boardroom was quite an historic moment for the Association, which was founded in Paris just over 60 years ago, as André Daguin reminded us in his words of welcome.

IH&RA Board meets in Paris




ISO and UNWTO address IH&RA Board in Paris on 29 June
The IH&RA Board of Directors met in Paris on 29 June at the kind invitation of IH&RA Member UMIH - Union des Métiers et des Industries de l'Hôtellerie. Invited to address the meeting were Kevin McKinley, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Eugenio Yunis, Head of Programmes & Coordination, at the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This was the third Board meeting to be held under the Presidency of Dr Ghassan Aïdi.

Amman selected for IH&RA Congress 2007




Jordan's capital to host the next IH&RA Congress, 18-19 October 2007
At its recent meeting in Paris, the Board formally accepted the invitation extended by Cham Palaces & Hotels, the Jordan Hotel Association and the Jordan Restaurant Association to host the 43rd IH&RA Congress in Amman, capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Mounir Ben Miled and André Daguin join the Board
The recent Board meeting in Paris welcomed Mounir Ben Miled, President of Honour of the Tunisian Hotel Federation, as the new Secretary and André Daguin, President of the French Hotel & Restaurant Association, as Restaurant Representative. At the recent meeting in Paris Board Members extended a warm welcome to Mounir Ben Miled, President of Honour of the Tunisian Hotel Federation, as the new IH&RA Secretary and André Daguin, President of the French Hotel & Restaurant Association, as Restaurant Representative. Both men have a long association with IH&RA - so it was basically a "welcome back".

During the last two years the Australian Government has done much to prepare Australia for the possibility of an influenza pandemic. The Government is now encouraging advanced preparation by tourism businesses for a potential pandemic and is committed to providing resources to assist them in this process.

The EU White Paper "A Strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity-related health issues" recognises that: 1. Individuals are ultimately responsible for their lifestyle. 2. Only well-informed consumers are able to make informed decisions. 3. One set of coordinated actions at EU level by all parties involved is preferable to numerous individual actions at Member State level.

UNWTO forecasts strong tourism growth in 2007




Global hotel performance driven by strong average room rates
2007 has started on a higher than expected note for global tourism. From January through April, international tourist arrivals worldwide rose by over 6% to 252 million, representing an additional 15 million arrivals as against the same four-month period in 2006. Hotel performance across all regions has been driven by improvements in average room rates.

HITEC records 2nd largest attendance




Hospitality and Technology Challenges met at HITEC 2007
Held June 25-28 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, USA, HITEC® (Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference) was the second largest in the conference’s history, with 5,736 attendees. The exposition and conference had over 300 exhibiting companies, ran over 40 education sessions and gave recognition to hospitality industry professionals.

National Restaurant Association USA appoints new President & CEO




Dawn Sweeney to lead NRA commencing 1 October 2007
The National Restaurant Association has just announced the selection of Dawn Sweeney as the president and chief executive officer of the organization. Among her 25 years of experience in marketing and advocacy, Ms. Sweeney's previous leadership includes positions at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the International Dairy Foods Association, where she began her career.
