Celebrating its 60th Anniversary in Year 2006, IH&RA will soon embark on a new era! At the IH&RA Annual General Assembly held in Nice, France 28 October, a new Board of Directors was elected, led by IH&RA President Dr. Ghassan Aïdi, all of whom are committed to enhancing IH&RA's role as the only global trade association exclusively representing the hospitality industry worldwide!

Welcome to new IH&RA President Dr. Ghassan Aïdi, President, Cham Palaces & Hotels. “This is a tremendous honour,” says Dr. Aïdi, “I embrace the challenge and privilege of being IH&RA President and look forward to serving members worldwide.” Dr. Ghassan Aïdi is a long-time IH&RA member and has served on the IH&RA Board of Directors as Vice-President for Hotels and Regional Vice-President for the Middle East. As President of Cham Palaces & Hotels and Royal Regency International Hotels, a US-based Hotels Management Company, Dr. Aïdi embodies the global hospitality industry. He maintains offices on three continents, and manages Cham Palaces & Hotels’ luxury properties in USA, France, Lebanon, UAE, Syria and Jordan.

In Nice, IH&RA members paid tribute to Ejnar Söder who recently announced his retirement as Trustee of the Foundation for the Future. President, Nordic Hotels Sweden, Past President IH&RA, and Chevalier of the Confrérie Internationale des Amis de l'Hôtellerie et de la Restauration, Ejnar was the Guest of Honour at the IH&RA dinner in Nice where members gave thanks for his many years of service to IH&RA, elevating Ejnar to the level of "Officer" of the Confrérie.

IH&RA President Dr. Ghassan Aïdi has signed the partnership agreement with UNEP to launch the APELL Project “Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at the Local Level (APELL)” run by UNEP for “Improved Disaster Impact Reduction in Tourism Destinations.” This project is fully funded by the EU and will benefit the the hospitality industry worldwide!

Dr Margaret Chan, from the People's Republic of China, was elected to be the next Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) on 9 November 2006. This election followed the sudden death of Dr LEE Jong-wook, WHO Director-General, on 22 May 2006 during WHO’s annual World Health Assembly.
