HOTEL & CATERING INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION - HCIMA

HCIMA is the professional body for managers and potential managers in the hospitality industry.

Mission

To bring together the common interests of both the public and private sectors, in the provision of food and accommodation services, to create one professional management association for the entire industry.

Membership
The HCIMA has a world-wide membership of around 23,000 within 27 UK regional branches and 17 international groups.

 Background
The HCIMA was formed in 1971 by the amalgamation of the UK Hotel and Catering Institute (created 1949) and the UK Institutional Management Association (created 1938).

Fields of activity

  • The association is an active member of the Joint Hospitality Industry Congress and the Hospitality and Foodservice Industry Forum. This provides both the opportunity for discussion of key issues and a powerful collective voice for lobbying on behalf of the industry
  • HCIMA liases with the EU in Brussels and Strasbourg and works with international bodies, to promote professionalism in hospitality management around the world.
  • HCIMA Research Register and World Trends Database on WHATT CD ROM is researched in the UK and the USA.
  • HCIMA encourages the development of international groups, which lobby their government, develop local hospitality education and also organise events.
  • HCIMA plays a major role in keeping members and the industry informed and up to date through its information service, publications, advisory groups and topical seminars

Aims & Goals

  • For every practising manager in the UK hotel and catering industry to be a member of the association, with its qualification giving managers a "licence to practice".
  • To win greater recognition for managers throughout the hospitality industry, to represent their views and lobby on their behalf.
  • To help members develop and maintain their knowledge, skills and ability.
  • To provide an interface between education and industry.
  • To set recognised educational standards and assist in the recruitment and mobility of labour.

Relationship with IH&RA
There is a joint commitment by the two organisations to work more closely together via greater involvement in each other’s activities where obvious synergies exist, to benefit the members of both associations.
