IATA is the international trade association representing the airline industry.

IATA’ s objective is to represent and serve the airline industry. It is the prime vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable, secure & economical air service – for the benefit of the world’s consumers.
Membership When it was founded IATA had 57 member airlines from 31 nations, mostly in Europe and North America. Today it has 278 airlines from more than 130 nations worldwide including the world's largest. These airlines fly over 95 percent of all international scheduled air traffic.
Background IATA - The International Air Transport Association - was founded in Havana, Cuba, in April 1945. The modern IATA is the successor to the International Air Traffic Association founded in The Hague in 1919 - the year of the world's first international scheduled services.
Structure It was reorganized on a “two-tier” basis in 1979:
- Trade Association (technical, legal, financial, traffic services and most agency matters) headed by the Director General.
- Tariff Coordination (passenger fares and cargo rates, agents’ commission)
There are now nearly 81,000 IATA agents worldwide.
